The Making of Ewu Book Fair
…Brief History of Ewu Book Fair
The concept and blueprint of Ewu Book Fair was created in June 2018 by Osajele Godsent Jomo, an emerging author and Auchi Polytechnic trained Journalist, writer and Publisher of many books including: “The Struggles of a Scholar”, “Ebeagbor: the flower that blossoms in adversity” (listed by Edo State Ministry of Education); “Baba Ijebu: the woman with dreams”; “Time and Chance” and “Security First”. All his books are selling fast in bookshops accros Nigeria with a strong online presence especially on Amazon.
Worthy of mention in the making of Ewu Book Fair is a cousin brother of Godsent Jomo named Saintmoses Eromosele (SME). He is the author of the inspiring novel titled “The Winds of Life”, Which he wrote at the age of 16 as an SSS 2 student of Edokpolor Grammar School, Benin City. He attended the Frankfurt Book Fair in Germany in 2008 and had thus embraced and believed in the idea of a book fair in his country home Ewu. Even though he has not attended any of the Ewu Book Fair editions, he has been consistent in financial support and motivational collaboration all through the editions.
Early co-pioneers of the event are: Chief Osiri Sadoh (Author and Chairman, Organising Committee of the first edition 2018); Rev Albert Oboh (of the Nigerian Baptist Convention, Chairman, Organising Committee of the second edition 2019); Engr Fidelis Edokpa (Master of Ceremony of first Edition 2018, Author and the incumbent President of Ewu Progress Foundation); Hon. Farouk Ehimegbe (Master of Ceremony of Second Edition 2019) and Comrade Kingsley Ohens (President of Esan Youths Organization and Publicity Secretary of Second Edition 2019).
Other brains behind the success of Ewu Book Fair include individuals and associations. They are: Comrade Freeborn Ahanon (Proprietor of Freeborn Ahanon Debate Society); Mr. Paul Aluede; Mr. Ededeawanlen Ofino; Prince Shaka Momodu (Proprietor, Shaka Memorial College); Ehizogie Iyeomoan (award winning Poet) Chief Eric Ebozele (Philanthropist); Late Chief Omosun Ojeanelo; Dr Fabomo Edoleyi; Dr Alexender Ikheloa; Comrade Mark Akhuetie, Mr. Emiator Jonathan; Mr Freedom Ebohon (Artist); Comedian James Leo; members and stakeholders of Ewu Progress Foundation; Esan chapter of the International Organization on Migration (OIM), Pastor Godstime Edokpa (Pastor G); Prince Tijani Ojeifo (PTOM),; the Rev Chima Family of the Assemblies of God Church; Late Prof. Eichie (immediate past Chief Priest of Obieme); Esan Youths Organization; Principals, Students and Management of all the Schools in Esan Land (public and private school who has always honoured our invitation.
All of the aforementioned and many others whose names are not stated in the writing of the success stories of the Ewu Book Fair, contributed in one way or the other. They are all behind what Ewu Book Fair is today. The event has the potentials to evolve to international standard.
It was in an effort to promote upcoming authors and the zeal to promote books, arts and creativity that inspired the brand name: The Ewu Book Fair.
The first edition of the event took place in November 2018 and was acclaimed to be successful and impactful by students, teachers, authors and booksellers. A total of 1,200 spectators and exhibitors attended the historic first edition in November 2018.
In the Prose Writing Competition segment of the first edition, a young talented writer by name Miss Cynthia Chima, an SSS 2 students of Ikekato Secondary, Irrua Edo State won a book publishing deal as the best writer of the event leading to the publishing of her first novel titled: “She Broke My Rules”, an inspiring novel which was exhibited in the 2nd Edition of Ewu Book Fair 2019.
The second edition in November 2019 was an encouraging improvement on the maiden edition as it featured explosive inter-school debate competition among over 30 secondary schools in Edo Central Senatorial District. In that edition, trophies and prizes were provided for the overall best three schools. The event was well attended with over 2000 guest and exhibitors including students, teachers, school owners, booksellers and publishers in attendance.
The 3rd edition for 2020 was suspended owing to the outbreak of Covid 19 Virus that led to lockdown and restrictions on public gathering.
The planning of this year 2021 edition has been taken over from the pioneer organizers by the Esan Creative Youths Foundation, (EYCF, a CAC registered Organization), aimed at promoting creativity and educational exploits in Esanland. The reason for this takeover is to enlarge the event through corporate handling and to bring in new visionary hands to the project as the event has grown beyond individual organization.
