Benin City 16th April 2021
A development oriented global Edo Organization, the Edo Dynasty United Organization Worldwide, has commended the state Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki for his recent comprehensive taxation collection initiative in Edo State. Recently, the governor enlightened a cross section of tax officials in Benin City, about the state government plans to coordinate all the various state taxes to enable business owners and other tax paying citizens make payments through a single platform.
The proceedings of the training workshop recorded in a broadcast media video was made available to Radio Esan by Comrade Brown Ehigie Osemwengie, President of Edo Dynasty United Organization Worldwide.
Contents of the video extensively educated the masses of the state government taxation plans that will make the tax paying process easy and promote accountability. The people who pays the tax will also see the amount that was raised in the entire state and how it was used for public good.
Commenting on the positive development, Comrade Osemwengie commended the Governor on behalf of his organization. In his words, “the governor has done well coming up with this initiative. It is pertinent that the tax payers pay to the right source and the amount realized periodically is accounted for. The people has a right to know what the government realized and how and where the money was used in the state for public good”, he said.
Comrade Osemwengie however call on the government to ensure that the policy is implemented to the letter. Business owners should be taxed base on the income recorded in their books of income and profit. Indiscriminate taxation of businesses had to stop. You don’t tax a business more than what it’s earning. Business owners should not borrow to pay tax. It’s frustrating. There is established percentage and considerations for taxation. Variables such as locality or location, global militating issues like the lockdown, and the profit making capacity of businesses should be put into considerations during tax evaluation. Businesses in rural areas struggling to survive should be considered for tax reduction”, he advised.
“The issue of multiple taxation under various nomenclature should stop by virtue of this new taxation plans by the governor”, he opined.
