Synergy Between The People And Security Agencies Will Address The Current Spate Of Insecurity In Edo State__ Rt. Hon. Barr. Friday Itulah, KSP.
An erstwhile two times Member of the House of Representatives and Former Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly under the Platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Rt. Hon. Friday Itulah, Esq. has posited that, with a robust synergy between Security Agencies and the people, banditry and kidnapping would become a thing of the past in Edo State.
According to Rt. Hon. Friday Itulah, the recent surge of banditry, kidnapping for ransom, robbery and Killing of innocent and defenceless and innocent citizens being experienced in the state, demand urgent attention from all and sundry and not just the Security personnels and the law enforcement agencies.
Against the backdrop of recent securities challenges experienced in the State, in particular and Nation at large, Hon. Friday Itulah particularly expressed sadness over the incessant cases of kidnappings and armed robbery attacks along the Benin-Ekpoma-Auchi road of Edo State noting that the situation is becoming worrisome as travellers no longer feel safe travelling on the road.
While speaking to newsmen in Benin City, Edo State capital, the two time Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly and a two time Member of the House of Representatives, asserted that security is the bedrock of any meaningful development. In his words; “The situation of insecurity in the state has gone beyond the stage of depending only on security agencies. All hands must now be on deck in restoring peace and security in the state.” For him; “If we have a secured society, development and progress will thrive. Insecurity hinders development and we cannot continue to live in perpetual fear of banditry, kidnapping and armed robbery in a Nation that is yearning for progress, and positive developments. The State must rise to this challenge and our Legislators must act fast in providing the enabling laws that will help strengthen the existing relationship between citizens and security agencies in the State in an effort to curbing the menace of insecurity and restoring sanity to our State.”
The Rt. Honourable in his recommendation, opined that the creation of community based security outfits by law and some forms of legalisation for other extant localized security and vigilante groups across the state could go a long way in addressing the endemic problems of insecurity. He equally opined that stricter measures, such as life imprisonment could help in addressing this situation
The Benin Auchi road is gradually becoming a no go route due to the action of the criminals whose trade mark is hijacking of motorists and passengers along the ever busy road.
Rt. Hon. Friday Itulah noted firmly that hostage taking and kidnapping for ransom are alien to us. They are barbaric practices that call for the urgent intervention of the State. Rt. Hon Itulah believes that a crime free society, where citizens can sleep, work, and travel without fear of being kidnapped or brutalized on the road is possible with the right synergy between the people and Security Agencies in the state.
The Former Lawmaker also used the opportunity to commend the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki and his team for their efforts so far in securing the state.
He equally advised Members of the Public to assist the government and Security Personnel by reporting people with suspicions movement to law enforcement agents with a view to eliminating such menace from the State.
